Would a gamecube controller work for Wii retro games that you would buy on WiiShop Channel?
Would a gamecube controller work the same way as the wireless retro controller in the sense that it would also work for the retro games you can buy on the Wii Shop Channel such as: N64, Super Nintendo, NES, etc. Or would those old-school games only respond to the Wii wireless classic controller?
Which would you guys recommend in terms of usefulness and versatility?

Yes, the Gamecube and CLassic Controllers are interchangeable on Virtual Console games (except from what I hear on a few TurboGrafix16 games, where a mysterious bug prevents the Gamecube controller from working). Unfortunately, no single controller is ideal for all games.
The button layout on the Gamecube controller is bad for certain SNES games that required you to on the SNES controller to "hold Y and press A", as that translates to "Hold B and press X" on the Gamecube controller (this action would be for things like the running spin jump on Super Mario World). On the SNES, this could pretty easily be done with the end and first knuckle of the thumb. However, on a Gamecube controller, there’s a huge A button in between, so you have to shift your hand to use your fingers, or stretch your index finger up to hit X. So the Classic Controller works better for a few of the SNES games.
On the flip side, the Gamecube controller does a much beter job of replicating the feel of an N64 controller and has a much better placement of the Z button, which was frequently used on the N64.

yes, you can substitute the classic controller for a gamecube one.
i downloaded Legend of Zelda: OoT and i just used the gamecube controller.
IMO, if you have a gamecube controller, use it. it saves you 20 bucks.
hope i helped.
