Classic Game Room HD – COLECOVISION system review part 1
Part 1 of 2. Classic Game Room HD Hardware Review, Watch in High Definition! CGRHD reviews the ColecoVision from Coleco released in 1982. The Colecovision was an amazing game console (and still is) with a catalog of more than 125 video games release between 1982 and 1984. It rivals the NES in many ways and certainly handed the Atari 2600 its own ass with superior arcade conversions and action packed old school video games. For retro gamers today the Colecovision is stil highly enjoyable to …

If you have an original Atari 2600 model, as opposed to the Atari 2600 Jr (3rd model I believe) as displayed above, you will notice that the games are tilted in such a way that you can indeed read what you are playing when in the system, as you read the top and it faces toward you. As you notice, the Qbert cartridge shown is upside down in the Colecovision, due to the different arrangement. I believe the second Atari 2600 model was designed for similar positioning as well.

The crash was in 1984 not. ‘83. It started in 1983.
Anyway Colecovision was a great console. It was the “Dreamcast” of it’s day pure and simple and had lots of promise, great hardware and a fully functional controller. Did you know that a Genesis controller will work with it?

What do you mean the crash in 1983? What is the crash? I want to know about the crash. Please answer my questions. Thank you!

It started in the summer of 1983, but it wasn’t until July 1984 when it was finalized. In ‘84,Coleco went under, most of the major 3rd party publishers except Activision vanished,Mattel sold the Intellvision rights to a patent company called “INTV” who in turn shut down Mattel Electronics.

Does anybody know where the power supplies 4 way connector can be bought? Ive had to throw power supplies away in the past because the cable got kinked and broken internally right behind the moulded connector. I think the TI99/4a also uses the same connector.

I last played my ColecoVision about a year ago! That thing STILL works! Computers are not made like that anymore — computers that can last more than 3 years, that is. Amazing, and still fun.

I fell like CGR cheated us. We were told there was going to be a part two of this video in which he would compare the colecovision to the atari 2600 and Nes. Although he never actually compares consoles, as if not to anger his fans, I think he should have done a bit more than weighed the ac adapters.

the ps3 also was really just too much for this time and age, and without the backwards compatibility, I believe that the ps3 will never recover.

Fun Fact: The ColecoVision actually contains the same graphics chip and CPU as the MSX and Sega SG-1000/SC-3000.
Also, it shares a sound chip with Sega consoles (including the Sega Master System), making them identical in hardware capabilities. The MSX, however, contains a different sound chip, but it is very similar in capabilities; General Instruments AY-3-8910. Therefore, porting titles between the systems is pretty easy. Can you imagine, Metal Gear on the Colecovision?? It’d be possible!
