Classic Game Room HD – PITFALL 2 for Atari 2600
“Just because the graphics are better doesn’t mean the game is better” CGRHD reviews Pitfall II, The Lost Caverns for the Atari 2600, an arcade video game classic released in 1984 by Activision. This is the sequel to the popular coin-op style retro gaming classic, PITFALL! released in 1982. Pitfall2 Lost Caverns was also released on the Atari 5200 and other gaming consoles. Pitfall Harry returns as he descends into caverns filled with bats, frogs and other various monsters. The game seems like a nod to Harrison Ford in Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Arc. Maybe it even inspired Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade?? Be sure to watch the original Classic Game Room episodes. Classic Game Room was the original classic video game review show on the Internet in 1999-2000, now on DVD. The HD series is reviewing PS3, Genesis, NES, Atari and Xbox 360. Xbox Live Arcade XBLA.

I remember I got an atari 2600 jr in 1987 for dirt cheap because nintendo was out – I purchased this game and was blown away by how good it was – I had more fun playing this game than most nes games at the time – but I remember the balloon being red and not gray – joyous melody too by far the best 2600 game…….

Exciting? I’m quite sure that if I played this I would almost immediately go back to Mario Kart or SSBB! Now THOSE games are EXCITING!

also interesting, that the soundtrack alters to a minor key and sad sounding while Pitfall Harry has errored, and is being sent back to the last red X. for the 2600, that was truly unique.

They can say anything they want about Quickclaw the Lion. That’s clearly a monkey, and it’s clearly doing something very naughty. As monkeys tend to do. A lot.
Bad, bad monkey.
But seriously, for me, THE best Atari2600 game of them all. The music is superb, the gameplay is superb, the checkpoints concept was superb… everything. What real flaw is there to be found in Pitfall II? Other than the disturbing monkey.

no they didn’t, Mario belonged to Nintendo, Nintendo was a 3rd party developer or something like that

I’m sure it was good for it’s time, I’m just saying it can’t compete with today’s games!

2.44 – 2.51 — Why did I think of only one work there… suppository. The math just wouldn’t add up O_o
Anyway you have got me liking Atari 2600 games! A couple I particularly like are the A-Team, Pitfall and Laser Gates.

February 8th, 2010 at 7:47 am
At about 2:00-2:14, that must have been one of the longest falls in video game history…and he LIVED! Also, I never knew there was a pitfall 2, other than the crappy NES game and half-good SNES pitfall.

I had it on the Atari 5200….. it is still one of the best games of all time.

@Doom2Guy at the time, activision had some of the most talented people in the industry. They truly realised the possibilities of the 2600 – the system was NEVER made to produce anything this advanced and yet The guys at activision did it and pushed more and more out of the system

I grew up with the Apple II version of this game. While it didn’t have the music, just a ding when you got gold, it was amazing Activision managed to squeeze that out of the Apple II, which was a slower machine, with even less sophisticated graphics hardware. I realize I’m comparing it to a 2600, but still, the TIA chip was lightyears beyond the capabilities of the Apple II’s graphics hardware.

if my ancient memory serves me correct, you can glitch this game and get right to the end by partially inserting the cartridge. this may take a few attempts, but i vividly remember warping right to the ‘monkey’ by doing this.
